Athletics and Hip Pain

For those involved in different athletic activities, pain is not uncommon. The risk for athletes, that long term pain becomes a reality due to pushing themselves to their physical limit, increases as time goes on. Over time, overuse and stress to the most used body parts lead to many physical problems for athletes, one of which is hip pain.

Because most sports activities involve the use of the legs, hip problems in athletes can be common. Typically athletics involving running, kicking, squatting and the like eventually cause hip problems in athletes. This is because the hip joint which is used in most leg movements is subject to too much strain. Muscle strains like groin pulls and hamstring strains, contusions, bursitis, fractures and arthritis are among the most common of many hip problems athletes can experience. While hip problems in athletes can be expected, there are possible ways to avoid them. A healthy lifestyle involving the right food and good habits can help maintain weight and good bone health. Richard Jackson, M.D.

Dr. Richard Jackson is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a member of the American Academy of Sports Medicine, a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and a State Delegate for the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation. Since 1986, he has been an orthopedic consultant for Brigham Young University.

Dr. Richard Jackson has been involved in the practice of orthopedics since 1981. From that time to the present, he has participated in providing orthopedic sports medicine consultation to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah and the College of Eastern Utah in Price. He provides sports medicine seminars for local high schools and junior colleges each fall and participates in free clinics at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah.
